WINNING first place at the Australian All-Star Cheerleading Federation championships last month, Emu Plain’s Little Mary’s dance troupe are gaining merit in the world of junior dance and cheerleading.

Among six teams from around the state, the Little Mary’s came up on top of the podium with their high-impact pompom routine.

Comprised of 14 dancers aged eight to 11, the group trains every week, with some of the dancers completing up to 15 hours a week.

Backing up their win at the statewide cheerleading event, the girls also placed first at the federation’s two-day Dance Battle Edition competition in Kensington last week and won second place at a recent Cheercom event in Dural.

The dance troupe will now focus their efforts on the NSW Cheerleading Championships in November.

Team Mum Suzie Vasilevska said the dancers, who also participate in jazz, ballet, contemporary and hip-hop dance styles, said the group danced for the love of dance.

“It’s exciting to watch them perform such a high energy dance routine from start to finish, it really is quite intense and captivating,” Ms Vasilevska said.

“They are encouraging to each other and it’s not all about the wins but the love of being on the stage, the excitement, their friendship and a love of dance.

“They are not just a team but a family,” she said.

The team has been nominated for the Local Sports Stars Awards. Nominations have now closed.
