For Lachlan Smith, success in the pool is all about the extra effort.

The 11-year-old West Pennant Hills swimmer is always the first one in the pool for every training session with the Castle Hill RSL Dolphins and puts his hand up for any additional session he can get.

That commitment has helped Lachlan to a breakout 2018, qualifying for the Australian School Sports National Championships and being awarded the Castle Hill RSL Dolphins Summer Championship Dave Wood Trophy for best effort and improvement.

Lachlan is hoping to achieve personal bests in freestyle and butterfly at nationals.

Lachlan was also selected for the Sydney Metro 2018 Target Swim Squad which he says has already helped him a lot.

“It has helped increase my fitness and core strength and exposed me to great coaches and making new friends within the sport,” he said.

Lachlan added that his expectations for nationals are “to achieve a personal best time for both my freestyle and butterfly and hopefully make a final.”

Lachlan is the latest nominee for the Hills Shire Times Local Sports Stars awards, which are on until August 31.
