KYLE Bonser has a need for speed — and his drive is ensuring his success on the go-karting track.

Bonser first got behind the wheel of a go kart when he was seven years old, and almost a decade later he competes at a national level.

“My dad took me to Wollongong go-kart track and I had a go in a hired kart to see if I would like it before my parents bought me one,” the Local Sports Star nominee said. “Unfortunately for them I loved it and haven’t looked back since.”

Kyle Bonser from Abbotsbury is a competitive go-karter and a Local Sports Star nominee.

Bonser, now 16, has ascended through the ranks from the midgets, rookies and juniors divisions to compete at a seniors level.

“I love the high speed, the close wheel-to-wheel racing and also the adrenaline rush,” he said. “I also enjoy travelling to new destinations and the people that I have met along the way.”

Bonser has travelled all over NSW to compete, from Eastern Creek and Lithgow to Newcastle, Orange, Manning Valley and Wollongong.

He has even progressed to the national ranks of go karting, competing on the Gold Coast last month for a chance to represent Australian overseas.

“I came third in the Race of Stars on the Gold Coast in juniors,” Bonser said.

“Last year I finished fourth in Australia in the Junior Max Pro-Tour and missed out by one spot on going to Italy.”

This year, Bonser is coming ninth in the seniors.

With three rounds ahead of him, anything is possible.

“My goal is to travel overseas for go karting,” Bonser said.

“My dream would be to compete at the Bathurst 1000 or do some endurance race with one of my teammates.”

Even outside the competition, Bonser harbours a love for the fun side of his sport.

“It’s a family sport, and you meet a lot of nice people along the way,” he said.
