Kim Lombard has just made history.
On Sunday, the Cherrybrook 14-year-old became the first female to play 50 games for Westbrook Junior Football Club.
Kim marked the milestone by running through a special banner alongside her teammates from the North West Lightning; a joint venture team with Hornsby Berowra and Pennant Hills.
Her playing career with Westbrook began in 2015 in the club’s under-12 boys team but when the girls-only Lightning was created the following year, she was one of the first players to sign up.
“At the time, I just wanted to play as much sport as possible so I played for the school team,” Kim said.
“I liked it so much that a friend and I joined the local club, Westbrook.
“I love the challenge and the team spirit (of Aussie rules).”
Kim has been able to experience the growth of women’s Aussie rules first-hand and she says she is thrilled to be the first female to mark the 50-game achievement for Westbrook.
“It’s exciting and an honour,” she said.
“Women’s AFL is really taking off and even three weeks from now one of my teammates is also reaching 50 games.”
Kim is the latest nominee for the Hornsby Advocate Local Sports Stars awards, which are on until August 31.
