BMX biker Harrison Craig doesn’t mind bumpy rides. The 15-year-old from Acacia Gardens is a gun on the BMX track, with a previous podium place at the national series events in Shepparton, Victoria.

“The adrenaline when you’re on the track is hard to explain, I don’t feel anything sometimes, it’s like I’m on autopilot,’’ he said.

“But when you get those big drops, that’s what you’re chasing.’’

Harrison’s passion for BMX started when he received a bike for Christmas when he was seven.

Setting his sights on the National Championships in Brisbane, he will need a top three place to move on to the World Championships in South Carolina in the US.

“I’m pretty confident I can get a podium place,” the Year 9 Norwest Christian College, Riverstone, student said.

“The competition is tough but I’ve been training hard and I have a lot of motivation.”

That training sees Harrison push six days a week sessions at the gym and on the track to stay fit and ready for competition, with the help of gym coach Ben Hidalgo and the Castle Hill BMX Club.

“I have school during the day and in the afternoon I train, so it’s not too hard to fit everything in,” Harrison said.

“The adrenaline is awesome and I have friends from all over the world (because of BMX).”

Harrison will depart to a national event on April 21 and will head to the US in July. Harrison has been nominated for the Local Sports Star award’s individual category.

Other categories are Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual, Young Sporting Spirit Team and Service to Sport.
