JARRED Garland will represent Australia at the Junior Men’s Softball World Championships in Canada next month after being selected for the under-19s Australian squad.
The star softballer, 17, hopes to qualify for the opens men’s national team after completing Year 12 this year.
And he looks to be in with a sporting chance, according to his father David, who is the coach of the NSW under-17s softball team.
“In a few years, I’d say he’s in with a very good chance,” Mr Garland said.
Selected to compete in the national softball championships in Brisbane this year, our latest Local Sports Stars Award nominee demonstrated his outstanding technique as a short stop — an action-packed, inner-field position. “He has a calmness about the sport,” Mr Garland said.
“He’s a quiet achiever and he gets on with what he has to do.
“I feel very proud and humbled by Jarred’s achievement in the sport.”
Jarred is one of three brothers who all play at state and national level in softball.
It appears to be a winning combination for their excellence in the sport, according to their father.
“There’s definitely a bit of brother competition and rivalry but generally their support for each other is outstanding,” Mr Garland said.
The 2018 Local Sports Stars Awards run until August 31.
Prizes will be awarded to athletes aged 18 and under across four categories. Details: localsportsstars.com.au/newslocal
