While most of her friends are enjoying their school holiday sleep-ins, 13-year-old Evie Saunders is up at the crack of dawn sailing around Sydney Harbour.
But she wouldn’t have it any other way.
After finishing first in the junior girls (U/15) division of the Australian Open Nationals in December, the Freshwater resident is currently preparing to represent Australia at next month’s Laser Youth World Titles in Canada. “Being first junior girl at only 13 felt amazing,” Evie said.
“It’s given me inspiration to do even better next time around. The laser class is very competitive at all levels and knowing that I can compete against the best laser sailors in the country gives me confidence for the future.”
The best thing Evie is hoping to gain from her first international competition is experience.
“As this is my first youth worlds, I hope to be able to gain experience from competing against sailors from other countries and to be racing in a big fleet event,” she said.
“I really just want to know that I’ve sailed to the best of my ability and walk away from the event inspired to do more events like this one.
“Representing Australia on the worlds stage is the most you could ask for in any sport and to do it in a sport that I love is just all that I could ask for. I’m super exited about travelling to Canada and walking into the event with my other teammates under the Australia banner.”
Evie is a Manly Daily Junior Sports Star nominee for the 2019 Local Sports Stars competition.
The awards recognise and reward talented athletes across a wide range of sports, as well as the hardworking volunteers who keep associations running each weekend.
