Worthy candidate: Former football journalist Ted Simmons nominated
Former football journalist Ted Simmons has been nominated for a category in Local Sports Stars Awards for his efforts in sport and journalism.
People stop Ted Simmons in the street to tell him their sporting memories, because the Maroubra man has been part of so many in the eastern suburbs.
The 90-year-old was president of the Eastern Suburbs Football Association and churches football competitions, and their referees’ associations.
A former broadcaster and journalist, he was also announcer at athletics held at ES Marks Athletics Field, Kensington, for decades.
Mr Simmons said parents still stopped him to talk about when he officiated at a memorable in their child’s life.
He still officiates at the athletics, and believes the sense of satisfaction is a volunteer’s reward.
“You walk away with a satisfied feeling that you don’t get if you won Lotto,” he said.
“Lotto will buy you an overseas trip, but it doesn’t give you the inner glow of satisfaction knowing you’ve helped others.”
Mr Simmons also had lengthy involvement in a 10-pin bowling competition.
He is a nominee in the Service to Sport category of the Local Sports Stars Awards.
He recently received a long service accolade at Sport NSW’s Community Sports Awards, which honoured the contributions of many volunteers.
The University of NSW Wests Killer Whales water polo team was named team of the year for its success.
Local Sports Stars is aimed mainly at athletes 18 years and under.
Categories include individual, team, inspiration and service to sport.
