Isabella Ren may only be six but she has already proven to be a fierce competitor in the world of fencing.

Isabella, who turns seven next month, has a trio of medals under her belt after taking up the sport last year.

In March, she finished with a bronze in the Under-9 Sabre category at NSW Fencing’s Roberta Nutt Shield.

A month later at the NSW Mini Series, she won gold in the under-7s and bronze in the under-11s.

Last year, she was ranked second in the state in the NSW Fencing Centre’s Under-7 Women’s Sabre and joint fourth in the Under-11 Women’s Sabre.

Isabella took up fencing mid last year, starting with foil before switching to sabre.

With sabre it is possible to score with the edge of the blade, and for this reason, the movements are very fast.

In the other two weapons of fencing, épée and foil, touches are only scored when using the point of the blade.

Isabella, of Kellyville, trains at the Hills Athletic Fencing Club in Castle Hill three to four times per week.

Fencing is not Isabella’s only sport – she also trains up to four hours a week in tennis and practises yoga.

When not playing sport, the Sherwood Ridge Public School Year 1 student enjoys oil painting.

Isabella has been nominated for the Junior Sports Star award in the Local Sports Stars program.

Nominations can be made in the categories of Junior Sports Star (individual or team), Young Sporting Spirit (individual or team) and Service to Sport. Nominations close on August 31.
