She’s only four years old but already Evie Delicata can tack up her pony Fyn, groom him and — most importantly — give him plenty of cuddles.
Her affection is reciprocated by eight-year-old Fyn, the latest member to join the Delicata family six months ago. Evie began horse riding when she was just three and trains twice a week with coach Heidi Ewington.
“She just really loves animals and she loves horses and I grew up loving horses as well. We kind of just introduced her to it and she fell head over heels,” mum Renee Delicata said.
The young equestrian star from Austral, recently won 14 ribbons at this year’s NSW Winter Woollies Show, run by the Pinto Horse Association of NSW, placing first six times, second three times, fourth four times and last place.
This week she will represent Thomas Hassall Anglican College, where she attends prep, at her first inter-schools competition.
Mrs Delicata said Evie was now “absolutely pumped” for competitions, participating in at least one a month at local agricultural shows or gymkhanas, on top of regular attendances at Cobbitty Pony Club.
“She pretty much does nearly everything by herself but with a little bit of assistance.”
But it wasn’t just about her own individual pursuits — Mrs Delicata said her daughter regularly demonstrated good sportsmanship and fairness by encouraging her peers and supporting them at competitions.
Evie is this week’s nominee for the Local Sports Star award in the Young Sporting Spirit category.
Sponsored by Rebel Sports and Clubs NSW the competition recognises the best of our young local sportspeople and their supporters, with plenty of categories to nominate in.
