A breakout 12 months has Brielle Mapanao (pictured) turning heads.

The 14-year-old golfer, from Quakers Hill, had a string of successes in 2017.

After last year taking out the NSW Junior Championships and Brett Ogle Junior Masters, Brielle began 2018 by claiming the girls’ division of the prestigious Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf.

Her father Dennis Mapanao said Brielle’s passion for golf began when she was just a toddler.

“She started hitting a ball at six and it’s just been a really natural progression from there,” he said.

Brielle is the latest nominee for the Blacktown Advocate Local Sports Stars award. The competition is on until August 31.

Prizes will be awarded to athletes aged 18 and under across four categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual and Young Sporting Spirit Team. There is also an open-age Service To Sport category.

“Your Local Club is proud to support this program, which shines a light on elite young athletes and the volunteers,” ClubsNSW chief executive Anthony Ball said.

NewsLocal would like to thank our partners Your Local Club - the NSW registered club industry, and Featherdale Wildlife Park for their support in 2018.
