AS the second youngest player in recent history to be selected for last year’s NSW Premier Cricket tournament, Bungarribee’s Dhruv Kant has some big goals for the upcoming cricket season.

Described by Blacktown District Cricket Club president Steven Foster as a top under batsman and an excellent wicket keeper, the 16-year-old skipped through two age grades last year, selected to represent the state in the Under 17s NSW Cricket tournament.

“He had a breakout season last year where he scored over 700 grade runs,” Mr Foster said. “We are expecting big things from Dhruvi this year.”

Currently training up to four times a week with the NSW Under 17s squad, the latest Local Sports Star Nominee hopes to up the ante by qualifying for the Australian Under 17s team to compete in the national tournament held in Brisbane in October.

Dad Raman Kant said his son, who has played cricket since age nine, always remained focused under pressure and attributed his talent for the sport to his mental and physical stamina.

“I think he is mentally and physically strong,” he said. “Being mentally and emotionally stronger for his age has allowed him to play at a higher level.

“He’s a strong kid; playing 90 overs is a tough ask which he manages very well throughout the game, he can handle the pressure.”

The 2018 awards run until August 31.

Prizes will be awarded to athletes aged 18 and under across four categories.
