BONNYRIGG’S Amy Chu has all the makings of a future Australian and international golf champion with her phenomenal form catapulting her to the top ranks in the state and country.
This will be enhanced by Amy’s four-year golfing scholarship to University of Washington where she will be able play regularly while studying for her business management degree.
This week’s nominee for the Local Sports Star Award is ranked 736 in world amateur golf and is fresh from leading NSW women’s team to their first victory in nine years at the prestige Australian Interstate Teams Championships.
Amy, a member of the Australian GC and Liverpool GC, won all her six games in the competition in South Australia, with NSW besting Western Australia 4-2 in the final played in blizzard-like conditions.
“It’s exciting and challenging because I have to deal with homesickness and getting used to the lifestyle in Washington,” Amy said about her upcoming move.
“I am pretty happy with my form and where my game is at but I am a big believer in education too.
“My main goal is to turn professional.”
Her leadership qualities have been evident from a young age and she has led NSW juniors prior to the seniors.
Amy, winner of the Harvey Norman Week of Golf (ACT) earlier this year, said they have a family atmosphere in the NSW squad and praised the team effort for the Australian title.
“I want to say a huge thanks to all involved with the team, our coach Dean (Kinney), our manager Claudia (Lim) and all who’ve helped get us here,” she said.
Several years ago, Amy first picked up a golf club after following her talented brother Andy around the course. She said she was intrigued by the game and wanted to have a go.
“I used to follow Andy around as he is six years older than me and wanted to try golf.”
Andy, who is now a professional player, and Amy picked up the rudiments of the game from their father.
She also credits her mother for being a big influence in her rising career, saying in an interview with Golf NSW: “The one major lesson that I will never forget from her is ’work hard, play hard’.”
