Sometimes we seek out what we’re talented in and sometimes our talent surprises us.

That’s exactly what happened when Ermington’s Amilia Garcia took up karate three years ago.

“I didn’t want to try it out initially,” the 11-year-old said.

“Mum said I needed self discipline and needed to learn to focus. She said I had too much energy and that we needed to use it. So I agreed to try it out.”

Two years later, Amilia won gold in kumite (choreographed routine) at the nationals in Sydney and has steadily added to her medal tally ever since.

Her most recent achievements include three golds and a bronze from a regional tournament earlier this year.

Amilia said she was thrilled with her results.

“(Winning) the three gold medals was a fantastic feeling, especially when I had never really done team kata (sparring) and kumite,” she said.

Amilia is the latest nominee for the Parramatta Advertiser Local Sports Stars awards, which are on until August 31.
