Two men have been charged after allegedly trying to import 13kg of meth in vehicle parts from the United States.

Zouheir Ahamd, 31, and Mouhamed Jaafar, 27 have fronted Sydney’s Central Local Court on Tuesday and are facing a maximum penalty of life in jail if convicted of attempting to import a border controlled drug.

The AFP made the arrests after Border Force officials spotted anomalies in two cargo shipments from the U.S. earlier this month which eventually led them to the drugs hidden in four drive shafts, police will allege.

The AFP then switched the drugs with a dummy substance before a controlled delivery of the cargo to a Liverpool warehouse yesterday.

Police will allege Jaafar and Ahmed picked up the consignments.

Detectives will further alleged the pair used details of legitimate businesses to have the cargo delivered before intercepting the delivery just before it reached the actual business premises.

A search on a Kogarah home yesterday also saw police allegedly locate traces of meth on vacuum seal devices and other objects believed to be used in what they say is a drug distribution set up.

Both men were not brought up on screen in court today, but their lawyers have both flagged they will be applying for bail next month.

Their case will return to the Central Local Court in November.

“The AFP will work closely with its domestic and international partners to continue enquiries and identify possible distributors within Australia,” AFP Acting Superintendent Rob Jenner said.
