Nearly three years since it opened its southwest Sydney campus in Liverpool, the University of Wollongong is pushing ahead with plans for a permanent campus.

The university has called for expressions of interest to create a new campus in the city centre, with a particular focus on mixed use developments.

Its new home will be a permanent, purpose-built facility for students, replacing its start-up campus at 33 Moore St, where Liverpool City Council is also based.

The university currently offers business, commerce, law, nursing, communications, information technology and international studies courses in Liverpool.

University of Wollongong chief finance officer Damien Israel said the plan was to grow the student population by 2030.

“Within three years we have grown to around 1000 students and now we are setting our sights on delivering a purpose-built permanent campus to accommodate 7000 students by 2030,” Mr Israel said.

“The university is very grateful for the warm welcome we have received in Liverpool and for the support we have received from Liverpool City Council.”

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller described the plans as a “great vote of confidence in Liverpool”.

“The University of Wollongong opened its doors in Liverpool in 2017. We were thrilled that such a highly regarded institution had chosen Liverpool.

“Two years on, our streets are more vibrant thanks to the volume of students that now walk them and our young people have more opportunities to study close to home, not to mention the beautiful mural depicting UOW student Adi Holmes that graces our skyline”.

Cr Waller said the move cemented Liverpool’s position as a quality tertiary education destination.

“This comes as Liverpool is maturing into Sydney’s third CBD,” she said.
