Thumbs up as show puts community focus on sport

LOCAL sport and its place at the heart of many Aussie communities was in the spotlight when radio star Ben Fordham broadcast from Moorebank Sports Club.

LOCAL sport and its place at the heart of many Aussie communities was in the spotlight when radio 2GB star Ben Fordham broadcast his newsy mix of information and fun across Sydney from Moorebank Sports Club today.

Rugby league star turned commentator Darryl Brohman, “the Big Marn” was popular with kids or all ages at the outside broadcast as was the free sausage sizzle, photo booth and even a goat from the club’s animal farm.

The club, better known as Sporties, is adjacent to an expansive Heathcote Rd complex of fields and courts. Flying blue-and-white colours, it has 165 junior teams playing rugby league, soccer, netball, baseball and cricket.

“Our charter is to foster and promote junior sport,” said the club’s CEO Tracey Lentell.

“All of our sporting clubs can run coaching programs with our support.”

Holsworthy residents Cheryl and Shane Johnson’s sons Luke, 11, and Mark, 9, play baseball with Moorebank Royals were drawn to the “community club”.

“You know a lot of people, you know you are going to have a lot of support,” Mrs Johnson said. “I just like it.”

The Friday afternoon broadcast was organised, with support from ClubsNSW, as nominations are being submitted for the Local Sports Star awards, run by NewsLocal, publisher of community newspapers including the Liverpool Leader, Canterbury Bankstown Express and Fairfield Advance. Clubs NSW support the Local Sports Star program.
