Matcha, pistachio, lemon meringue, even Milo-flavoured — these aren't your ordinary doughnuts.
One southwest Sydney business is bringing a unique tough to the much-loved sweet treat by offering handcrafted doughnuts in an assortment of flavours, both classic and boldly creative.
The Doughnut Mum’s range includes cinnamon twist, pistachio, Milo, chocolate ganache, pineapple, matcha, lemon meringue, biscoff, raspberry, plain, butter caramel, apple and walnut, coconut and white chocolate, and a powdered variety.
And for Lunar New Year, the shop will release a limited number of durian doughnuts in response to “a massive request” for the distinctive flavour.
But it’s not just the flavours that have been carefully considered; The Doughnut Mum owner Lita Khorn has perfected her dough after much experimentation to deliver on taste and texture.
Using fresh yeast and vegetable oil, the result is a doughnut with a chewiness in the tradition of European doughnuts.
She and her husband Holly have set up shop in Warwick Farm, building on a history of working in family bakeries.
Inspired by a trip to the US several years ago, the couple from Canley Vale wanted to offer what was so abundant there but sorely lacking in Sydney — gourmet doughnuts sold by independent vendors.
“I’ve actually always had an obsession with doughnuts,” Ms Khorn said.
“Over (in the US) they had a lot of gourmet range and different doughs as well. A lot of people’s perceptions is the only way to have a doughnut is it has to be like Krispy Kreme or Donut King, but when I was over there the bakers over there really experimented with doughs, introduced brioche doughnuts and they even had potato dough.”
“They had a lot of small doughnut shops and I realised over here we don’t have many independent doughnut shops and that’s something that I wanted to make a difference (with).”
The couple has also partnered with Wetherill Park business Goliath Coffee Roasters to produce a unique blend that complements the sweet treats.
They also offer housemade drinks made with sugar syrups made instore and, as with their doughnuts, there is a big focus on natural ingredients.
“I wanted to offer something that was actually different and affordable for the area, something that wasn’t just manufactured.”
The Doughnut Mum is located at Shop 10/1 Sappho Rd, Warwick Farm NSW 2170.
