A teenager has been charged after he allegedly threatened a rugby league player with a knife and fled the scene after a match in Sydney’s southwest.

Ravon Sio, 19, who was a spectator, allegedly confronted a player at the conclusion of the Central West open men’s match between the Chester Hills Hornets and the Canley Vale Kookas at Hammondville Oval about 2pm Sunday.

Police say the men had a verbal altercation before Sio allegedly threatened the player with a knife.

Other spectators and players told police they intervened and assisted before the Sio fled the scene.

There were no reports of injuries.

Officers from Liverpool City Police Area Command attended and arrested a Sio nearby.

He was taken to Liverpool Police Station and where he was charged with affray, armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and wield knife in a public place.

The South Wentworthville man appeared before Liverpool Local Court on Monday, where he was formally refused bail to appear at the same court on August 21.

A NSWRL spokesman said the governing body has a “zero tolerance approach” towards aggressive and anti-social conduct.

“The NSWRL, together with Canterbury Junior Rugby League and Parramatta Junior Rugby League, is supporting police investigations into an alleged off-field incident involving a spectator at an open aged match at Hammondville Oval,” the spokesman said.

“The NSWRL has a zero-tolerance approach towards aggressive and anti-social conduct and will make no further comment until the investigation is complete.”

The Chester Hills Hornets did not wish to provide a comment and the Canley Vale Kookas have been contacted for comment.
