A new vocational course will help equip Liverpool’s future workforce with essential skills as plans get underway to create a world-class health and education precinct in the city centre.

TAFE NSW will deliver a Statement of Attainment in Medical Administration for 21 students from John Edmondson, Ashcroft and Miller high schools.

The course aims to create a pipeline of skilled workers with the anticipated growth of the city’s health and education sector.

Year 10 students will learn practical skills such as labelling specimen samples, ordering medical equipment, using a blood pressure machine and assessing patients in a new simulated medical surgery at TAFE NSW’s Liverpool campus.

Last year, the State Government committed $740 million towards redeveloping Liverpool Hospital and creating a medical and research hub.

The Liverpool Innovation Precinct, due for completion by 2026, is expected to double the number of local jobs in health and education to 30,000.

TAFE NSW regional general manager Michael Cullen said TAFE NSW was playing an active role, helping to generate new jobs in the health sector and related support industries.

“TAFE NSW is providing students with ongoing opportunities to learn hands-on skills relevant to the workforce of the future and we are positioned to capitalise on the momentum generated from the growth of Liverpool, in concert with industry partners.”

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Business and Finance Leah Simpson said the course would equip students with relevant skills.

“It’s a great way for students to learn in a simulated environment where TAFE NSW will teach them the practical skills required to work in administration in the health and medical field,” she said.

“TAFE NSW is helping students decide on a career they love by giving them a taste of what work in the industry is like.”
