LIVERPOOL Hospital will be transformed into a world-leading Health and Education precinct as part of a $740 million scheme by the State Government.
The plan, included in this week’s State Budget, is set to boost the local economy and establish a centre of excellence for health, education, research and innovation, according to NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet.
“The precinct has the potential to double the number of jobs in the health and education sectors to around 30,000 by 2036, representing almost 25 per cent of the local workforce,” Mr Perrottet said.
An integrated cancer center providing inpatient ambulatory services, diagnostic and outpatient services and research facilities will be included in the master planned precinct.
NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the capacity of the hospital will also increase as part of the redevelopment.
“This major redevelopment will see an expansion of Liverpool Hospital’s emergency department, neonatal intensive care, maternity and critical care capacity, as well as day surgery and radiology capacity,” he said.
The establishment of a health and education precinct is part of a $2.3 billion dollar health investment across the state in the next year and $8 billion in the next four.
Sydney Business Chamber Western Sydney Director David Borger welcomed the innovative new precinct, following several years of ongoing campaigns.
“Liverpool city has been identified as a great opportunity to attract potentially thousands of
new knowledge jobs in the health, education and research sectors through the development of an innovation precinct with a strong focus on these sectors,” Mr Borger said.
“The NSW Government’s commitment to a $740 million expansion of the Liverpool Hospital will make the precinct and all of Liverpool a magnet for new jobs in health, education and research that will leverage this public investment by setting up new businesses in the city.”
The record investment in the Health and Education precinct at Liverpool hospital also comes as the State Government dedicated funds towards upgrading Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital’s emergency department, as well as and ambulatory care facilities for Canterbury Hospital.
The schemes are a part of a $8 billion health infrastructure fund to be rolled out over the next four years.
The State Government also dedicated funds to plan for upgrades to Liverpool Boys and Liverpool Girls High Schools.
