A southwest Sydney man has been charged with assault after a road rage attack which the magistrate described as “atrocious”.

Rami Aldhaher, 29, faced Liverpool Local Court after the inexplicable incident in which he got out of his car and slapped the victim twice.

The court heard the victim had used his brakes to avoid an accident with the car in front of him, and put his hand up to apologise to Aldhaher in the car behind him.

Police facts state Aldhaher then got out of his car and attacked him.

Magistrate Peter Thompson described it as an act of unprovoked violence.

“There was no reason for you to react like that [and the victim] would have felt very scared, Mr Thompson said.

“Your behaviour was atrocious and your conduct was appalling – it will not be tolerated by these courts.”

Aldhaher pleaded guilty to the common assault charge, and was convicted. He received a $1000 fine, along with a nine-month community corrections order.

In sentencing, Mr Thompson accepted that Aldhaher had not committed any offences since 2015, and he had recently given speeches on peace at Ramadan events.

“That is completely undermined by your conduct on this occasion,” said Mr Thompson.

Police withdrew a second charge of intimidation, and it was formally dismissed.
