A multimillion-dollar plan to transform a series of southwest Sydney fields into a state-of-the-art sporting precinct — featuring an indoor aquatic centre, fitness facility and new hybrid turf and synthetic fields — will be bankrolled by the Liberals in an effort to win over voters.
NewsLocal can reveal a plan by Liverpool Council for a $50 million Moorebank Lifestyle Precinct, earmarked for Hammondville Park, which could benefit from a $21.5 million cash injection from a re-elected Perrottet Liberal government.
The Moorebank Lifestyle Precinct, currently in the design phase, would include an indoor 25m swimming pool and splash zone, as well as a covered grandstand, creche, cafe and high-altitude group training facility, according to Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun.
“This lifestyle precinct, as part of a future development application, would include an expanded precinct with multiple sports code,” Cr Manoun told NewsLocal.
“Moorebank Rams Rugby League would benefit from an expanded clubhouse with upgraded amenities, while the Moorebank Soccer Club would see a synthetic field and amenities upgrade.
“There would also be upgrades for cricket, baseball fields and amenities.”
Cr Manoun described the plans, which will also include female-friendly change rooms and
improved amenities for players and spectators, as “the best sporting precinct in Southwest Sydney”.
“We want this to be for kids to elite athletes and everyone in between — this will be a lifestyle precinct, not just a sporting hub.”
Liberal candidate for Holsworthy, Tina Ayyad, said the funding would result in the creation of a “sporting super centre”.
“The reinvigorated Hammondville Park sporting precinct will encourage more people, of all
ages, into local sporting clubs and cater for growing participation,” Ms Ayyad said.
She said the election commitment could cater for Holsworthy sports clubs and players, while also attracting newcomers.
“This is where Australia future Olympians will be made – from our next Freddy Fittler to
Australia’s first Football World Cup winners,” she said.
“This facility is already home to so many great local sporting clubs and organisations, and I
can’t wait to watch it grow in the years to come.”
The Liberal Government’s commitment towards the $50 million Liverpool City Council project would upgrade existing sporting fields and create a new aquatic centre for the growing
community.
Sports Minister Alister Henskens said the funding commitment would help create a “modern and diverse sporting precinct for both locals and visitors”.
Moorebank Rams Rugby League club representative Mark Weller said they would “believe it when they see it built”.
“We have been granted funds by the government before, but they never seem to cover the full cost of upgrades,” Mr Weller told NewsLocal. “If the Liberals return, we have been promised a groundbreaking facilities for all sporting codes at Hammondville Park.
“We have a real need for new facilities, particularly for our female teams as we don’t have the amenities to support them.
The Hammondville Park sporting clubs have been promised a $21 million injection by the Liberals for this sporting precinct, and we hope we get it.”
Meanwhile, Moorebank Soccer Club’s Daniel Flego said the funds would be a game changer for the region.
“We are one of the biggest clubs in our district with 850 players and hundreds of support staff,” he said. “We have seen a massive increase in female participants so we are in desperate need of new amenities to support them.
“The new fields would be a godsend, it will last a lot longer and with 70 teams and four fields, we need all the longevity we can get out of a field.
“If we get these funds we would be able to revolutionise the use of our sporting fields every single day.”
