An inmate’s attempts to escape were foiled after he knocked over a senior prison guard and fled into a garden area while his cell was searched for secreted contraband.
Jordan Finau, 31, faced Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday, having previously pleaded guilty to assaulting a law officer, attempting to escape from custody, hindering or resisting a law enforcement officer in the execution of duty and possessing a mobile phone as an inmate.
Agreed facts state Finau informed Corrective Services officers he had tablets of Winstrol – an anabolic steroid – secreted in a “pill container” in his cell at Mannus Correctional Centre in Tumbarumba on July 1.
He was directed to stand with his hands on his head, under guard, while the tablets were seized.
“(Finau) initially complied with the direction before suddenly running at speed towards the exit/door of unit eight where a senior corrective officer was standing,” the facts state.
“He knocked over the victim and ran from the unit and continued to run into the garden area.”
Finau was caught a short distance from the cell, where he resisted initial efforts to detain him and fell, along with prison guards, to the ground.
“(Finau) was instructed a number of times to stop resisting to which he continued to resist,” the facts state.
“He was requested to place his hands behind his back which he refused.
“Once he was detained a black coloured Google mobile phone was located on the accused inside his pants.”
Finau was taken to the security cells, where he made admissions to the ownership of the mobile phone and contraband.
On Wednesday, magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim ordered a sentencing assessment report and adjourned the matter to February 5 for sentencing.
