Concerned southwest Sydney residents have been living in a “nightmare” after being forced to permanently close their windows to avoid dust and noise as hundreds of trucks flood their roads while the area awaits the opening of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis.

Homeowners have called for upgrades to Mamre Road in St Mary’s – set to become a key thoroughfare into the Western Sydney Airport – as residents complained they haven’t “had a good sleep in years” due to increased traffic and congestion.

The NSW Government committed $253.6m over the next four years, with $7.6m allocated this financial year for stage one upgrades to Mamre Rd between the M4 Motorway and Erskine Park Rd.

The improvements include converting the road from two into four lanes with six lanes in future if required, a new shared path and the installation of permanent noise walls along the eastern side of Mamre Rd at St Clair.

Despite the government’s announcement, residents said they’re “sick of promises” and want the road upgraded to help alleviate the growing traffic and noise from incoming trucks.

Resident John Tinnie who lives on Pine Creek Cct, St Clair – which backs directly only Mamre Rd – said he’s waited more than 10 years for the upgrades.

“We pay our rates, why should we have our windows closed during the day and night to try and stop the noise of trucks going up and down the road 24 hours a day,” he said.

Mr Tinnie said he vacuums his house daily to remove dust brought in by the trucks, which can be over one inch thick.

“It’s been horrible, the house vibrates from the noise and people have said this upgrade was going to get done and it hasn’t,” he said.

“A lot of people don’t want this airport out here … and now we’re paying the price for it.”

Another Pine Creek resident Joanne Hillier, 62, has lived in the area for 39 years and said Mamre Rd is an “absolute nightmare” with hundreds of trucks slamming into sinkholes everyday at the back of her home.

“The noise of all the trucks as they’re all going down into the airport’s industrial park is horrendous, it sounds like thunder and you can feel the house shake,” she said.

Ms Hillier said the noise and traffic started getting worse over the last 10 years and said it’s been impossible over the last five years to get a peaceful night’s sleep.

“My husband had stage four cancer and when he was going through chemo you had all the noise and it just gave him headaches,” she said.

“It’s a nightmare and it’s not fair that we have to put up with it.”

Badgerys Creek Liberal MP Tanya Davis previously started a petition calling for the Labor to confirm funding for the stage 1 upgrade on the “forgotten road” after $220m was initially promised back in 2019.

“The congestion and truck movement will only continue so we can’t afford to stop essential road connections and upgrades,” she said.

A Transport for NSW spokesman confirmed the NSW government has committed to funding the Mamre Rd upgrade between the M4 Motorway at St Clair to Erskine Park Road, with construction to begin in 2024.
