A new two-lane bridge and underpass have been proposed for the M5 motorway between Moorebank Ave and the Hume Hwy in a bid to bust congestion for long-suffering motorists travelling westbound.
The State Government is investigating upgrade options and has flagged a design it says will help tackle the congestion caused by traffic trying to enter and exit the M5 at Liverpool during the afternoon peak.
One of the major changes proposed is a new two-lane bridge across the Georges River and railway lines so motorists can more easily access the Hume Hwy exit.
A new underpass would also be built at Moorebank Ave to connect with the bridge and the existing exit from the M5 Motorway to Hume Hwy would be closed.
Transport for NSW executive director for Sydney John Hardwick said the recommended option would ease congestion and improve the efficiency of the surrounding road network.
“Work would also involve changing the existing Moorebank Ave westbound entry and exits ramps to improve efficiency at the interchange,” Mr Hardwick said.
“By removing this key pinch point, motorists would experience smoother and safer journeys on this section of the M5 Motorway and Moorebank Ave.”
The changes would also support increased traffic and freight movements in Liverpool and Moorebank, with the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal expected to contribute to that growth.
“In the next 10 to 20 years, traffic and freight movements will increase which is why the NSW Government is working hard to address this expected growth now,” Mr Hardwick said.
Residents can provide feedback on the proposal until February 21, 2020.
