It will come as no surprise to motorists who use it daily — the M5 motorway at Moorebank has been voted the worst road in the state for congestion.

The result comes from the largest transport survey in NSW history conducted by the NRMA ahead of the March 23 state election.

More than 23,000 respondents were asked to rate the state’s roads and highways on a scale of very poor to excellent based on congestion, condition and safety in the Rate Your Road survey.

The M5 motorway at Moorebank received the most number of votes (510) for a specific location, topping a list which included Epping Rd at Ryde, Parramatta Rd at Ashfield and Pennant Hills Road at Ku-ring-gai — all of which rated poorly for congestion.

NRMA Group chief executive Rohan Lund said the data was “invaluable” with the state election in less than a fortnight and a federal election in coming months.

“These survey results are telling. In Sydney, some of the most congested roads will soon be transformed with the completion of WestConnex and NorthConnex.

“We expect to see very different results for Pennant Hills Road, Parramatta Road, the M5 and the Pacific Highway once these projects are completed,” he said.

Mr Lund said the message to policymakers was clear — there must be continued commitment to road and public transport services to match growth.

“Delivering the roads and public transport services of the future … is critical to NSW reaching its business and tourism potential,” he said.

“Perhaps most importantly of all, it is how we can best ensure our citizens can get home to their families safely and quickly every night.”
