A man has died after a fire broke out in a granny flat kitchen in Sydney’s southwest.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to Wonga Rd, Lurnea about 10.30pm on Monday after neighbours reported a gas leak. It was later established a small blaze had broken out at the property.

The occupant, a man aged in his 60s, was found unconscious in the granny flat and could not be revived.

Fire and Rescue NSW investigators determined the fire started in a kitchen fridge and burned out before emergency services arrived.

NSW Police established a crime scene at the home and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

In the wake of the tragedy, FRNSW are reminding the public that all homes are required to have working smoke alarms.

“Had the granny flat been fitted with a working smoke alarm, it is possible the tragic death of this man could have been avoided,” FRNSW superintendent Adam Dewberry said.

“Smoke alarms provide early warning in the event of a fire and therefore increase your chances of survival.”
