The former manager of an Aldi supermarket in Sydney’s southwest has faced Picton Local Court today after allegedly breaking in and stealing wads of cash from the business’ safe.
Gledswood Hills resident Raafat Abderrazeg, 38, was charged with break and enter, and two counts of knowingly deal with proceeds of crime.
An Aldi employee attended the store located on Hoxton Park Rd about 3.30am on January 20 after the alarm system had been triggered.
When the employee arrived he noticed a section of the double brick wall had been removed, and a swipe panel near the loading dock had been intentionally destroyed which prevented access.
Police officers attended the scene and noticed more damage to the supermarket’s security systems and safe.
Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad launched an investigation which led to Abderrazeg’s arrest at Gledswood Hills, near Campbelltown, on Thursday.
Homes at Gledswood Hills and Green Valley were raided by police following the arrest, with cash, mobile phones, vehicles, and documentation seized for further examination.
The man was taken to Narellan Police Station and charged with break and enter, and two counts of knowingly deal with proceeds of crime.
Police allege that Abderrazeg, who is a former store manager of the supermarket, was responsible for the theft of the cash from the supermarket’s safe, which police allege was greater than $60,000.
Documents tendered to the court allege that Abderrazeg then dealt with $28,290, and $49,430, knowing they were the proceeds of crime, between January 21 and April 24, 2022, across Gledswood Hills and Green Valley respectively.
Abderrazeg was granted bail on the condition he reports to police three times a week, is not allowed near any international departure points or to acquire a new passport, has a curfew between the hours of 9pm to 6am, and is only allowed one mobile phone.
He is set to return to Picton Local Court on June 17.
