A push for an express train service connecting Liverpool to the Bankstown metro has been championed by a southwest Sydney mayor who says it would provide the area “fast access” to jobs and business investment opportunities.

Liverpool mayor Ned Mannoun has called for an additional train line to run alongside the current T3 Line to connect western Sydney to the new metro rail from Bankstown to Sydney’s CBD.

“An express shuttle service from Liverpool to Bankstown will link southwest Sydney to the new metro rail network with fast access to good jobs and business investment,” Mr Mannoun said.

The proposed express line would bypass nine stations including Warwick Farm, Cabramatta, Sefton, Yagoona, Villawood, Carramar and Sefton.

Mr Mannoun addressed a business western Sydney roundtable on Thursday and said he was disappointed the government had cancelled the planned extension of the metro to Liverpool.

“Without the metro being extended to Liverpool, there is a desperate need for a high-speed connection between Liverpool and Bankstown,” the mayor said.

This comes after the Labor Party confirmed in February last year they would scrap plans for the Westmead to Western Sydney Airport and Glenfield to Bankstown via Liverpool metro lines following a budget blowout.

With the Western Sydney International Airport set to open in two years Mr Mannoun said the government also needs to plan for greater connectivity to the Aerotropolis.

The mayor also called for express bus services or trackless trams from Liverpool to the airport as the need for first class transport links was “overwhelming”.

Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue CEO Adam Leto backed the Liverpool Mayor’s call for an express train shuttle service from Liverpool to Bankstown as a quick-fix solution to a long-term issue.

“A metro connection from Bankstown to Liverpool is a critical piece of the metro puzzle and one that is important in connecting a significant part of the south-west to Western Sydney International Airport,” he said.

“But we also need a solution now, because residents and workers can’t afford to wait another decade before seeing this much-needed public transport connection delivered.”

Business Western Sydney Executive Director David Borger said the NSW Government has been working on a transport plan for Liverpool for the last four years and it was “time to sign it off”.

“The Western Sydney Airport is proposed to bring 20,000 new jobs and 10,000 new homes to the Liverpool region,” he said.

“We need to get the transport right to connect the local population centres in Liverpool and South Western Sydney with this job generating juggernaut.”

A Transport NSW spokesman said there is no investigation underway for an express train service from Liverpool to Bankstown but confirmed new bus services for the Nancy Bird Walton International Airport will be operational prior to opening in 2026.

“The new bus services will be part of the integrated transport network that will support new jobs and housing in the Aerotropolis.”

A spokesman for the Minister for Transport said the state government is committed to working with the Australian Government to fund an expanded business case considering potential future rail connections between the Aerotropolis Leppington/Glenfield and Campbelltown/Macarthur.
