A smart transit corridor that would connect Liverpool to the Western Sydney International Airport could accommodate different modes of transport and create vibrant new communities in southwest Sydney.

The potential for a multi-modal corridor that includes rapid bus transit, trackless trams and more along Fifteenth Corridor in West Hoxton was outlined in a design framework report commissioned by Liverpool Council.

The council is behind the proposed Fifteenth Ave Smart Transit Corridor — or FAST Corridor — which aims to create a sustainable transit connection to the new airport, allowing residents to tap into the opportunities there.

The council has also flagged the potential for new communities to spring up along the route and will encourage compact medium- or high-density development in appropriate locations.

“The corridor will be future-proofed for emerging technologies such as trackless trams. It will be more than a critical transport link – it’s also an opportunity to create new, sustainable communities along the route which are sensitive to their bushland and farming landscape,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.

“Our vision is to reduce sprawl, improve public transport and preserve the unique character of our growing region.

“The new corridor could support a range of housing types and employment opportunities, and connect residents, workers and visitors to natural assets including Western Sydney Parklands and local waterways.”

The council is also exploring options to incorporate active transport, such as cycling and walking, into the corridor’s design.

Early design work has begun on the council’s preferred corridor option and community feedback will be sought later this year.

The council has indicated it wants to complete the project in time for the opening of Western Sydney Airport in 2026.
