A man has fronted court charged over an alleged carjacking in Sydney’s southwest while three children were asleep in the car.
Levi John Dean Barber, 26, appeared before Magistrate Allison Hawkins at Liverpool Local Court on Friday facing four charges over the alleged carjacking and an attempted robbery in Liverpool last month.
Police allege the Liverpool man approached a 26-year-old woman about 1.30pm on June 28 at a Costco carpark in Casula and attempted to take her car keys and mobile phone.
He was unsuccessful and ran away.
Shortly afterwards, police allege Mr Barber entered a vehicle in a carpark on Orange Grove Rd, Liverpool, and took the driver’s seat while a 57-year-old man was standing next to the vehicle.
Asleep in the car were 21-month-old twins and a three-year-old child.
Police allege Mr Barber reversed the Chrysler into an unattended parked car before getting out of the car and running away.
Members of the public performed a citizen’s arrest before police arrived at the scene.
He was arrested and taken to Liverpool Hospital, and was released on Thursday afternoon before being charged with enter inclosed land, attempted aggravated assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle-inflict actual bodily harm, unlawfully take/drive motor vehicle with person in/on it, and never licensed person drive vehicle on road.
Magistrate Hawkins adjourned the matter to Monday, July 13 for a mental health report.
