A domestic violence offender with “anger management issues” punched his father in the face in an early-morning bedroom stoush, a court has heard.

Jordan Wilson, 29, fronted Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday where he was sentenced for assault occasioning actual bodily harm after lodging a late guilty plea.

The conviction came six months after an argument with his father, who was also his flatmate at the time, spiralled out of control at their Wolli Creek apartment.

Court documents state Wilson’s father had returned home from work at 2am and asked his son to leave his bedroom several times, saying “mate, get the f--k out of my room”.

The court heard Wilson then punched his father a “couple of times” before the victim left the unit and called police.

In court on Tuesday, Wilson’s defence lawyer submitted her client punched his father because he was “provoked” when the pair allegedly pushed and shoved each other during the argument.

However, Magistrate Philip Stewart shut down her submission and said there was no record of pushing or shoving in the police facts.

“There was no provocation,” he said. “He was asked several times to leave at 2am in the morning.”

His lawyer then submitted Wilson only laid a “few punches” during an attack which was not premeditated, but rather, occurred in a “heated moment”.

She pointed out Wilson’s remorse, anger management issues, and the fact he had “lost his relationship with his father, and housing” as a result of his actions.

But in delivering his sentence, the magistrate did not look favourably upon Wilson’s late guilty plea or criminal record.

“If he is remorseful he certainly wasn’t before the time of his plea,” Mr Stewart said.

“And here you are coming back before the court for domestic violence.”

The magistrate said Wilson had another domestic violence matter with a loved one before the courts as of May, after he allegedly breached an AVO held by a former partner.

Mr Stewart convicted Wilson to an 18-month community corrections order and anger management classes.

He also fined Wilson $1000 and ordered he take part in the EQUIPS domestic violence program.
