A police helicopter was called in to help arrest an aspiring construction manager after he led police on a six minute pursuit and dumped drug paraphernalia into a bush during a midnight drive.

Jack Hurst, 18, appeared for Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to mid range drink driving, police pursuit and drug possession following the high speed incident through Lurnea and Bardia on June 22.

Documents tendered to court state Hurst was driving over the 50km/h limit on Wonga Rd when a police car attempted to stop the teenager who continued to speed.

Hurst turned right onto Kurrajong Rd, Prestons and into a residential area where he reached speeds of 100km/h in a 60km/h zone and came close to colliding with numerous parked vehicles.

The teenager ran through two red lights at a speed of 150km/h in a 70km/h zone before pulling into Edmondson Park railway station where Polair was deployed.

“Hurst had to brake harshly to avoid colliding with another vehicle travelling in the same direction,” the facts state.

He continued to run through a third red light before stopping outside a home on Lowe Ave, Bardia and walked up to the garden bed.

“He placed a makeshift bong made out of a Gatorade bottle and a small black metal canister with a Garfield motif on the lid in a hedge,” the facts state.

Hurst drove around three police vehicles as they arrived in the street and turned into Macquarie Links Dr and drove onto a raised median strip where he collided into the gutter “causing extensive damage to the wheel”.

“Hurst underwent a breath analysis at Liverpool police station and returned a reading of 0.089,” the facts state.

Police later retrieved the drug paraphernalia where they also uncovered 1g of cannabis.

When asked about his driving he told police he drank four schooners of beer at the Willowdale Hotel and ate salt and pepper squid.

Hurst’s lawyer, Ms Mahon said the police pursuit began because her client “panicked” and he knew he shouldn’t have drunk alcohol and drove.

“It’s been quite a wake up call for the young man,” she said.

Magistrate Robert Rabbidge said Hurst had a “great future ahead” and had taken appropriate steps, including completing the traffic offenders program and seeing a psychologist following the incident.

Hurst was convicted for police pursuit and was sentenced to a community corrections order for 12 months where he must abstain from alcohol. He was also disqualified from holding a drivers licence for 12 months.

He was convicted for mid range drink driving, fined $700 and was issued a mandatory interlock order for 12 months.

Hurst was found guilty of the drug possession charge, but no conviction was recorded.

A charge of driving recklessly was withdrawn.
