Two public high schools in Sydney’s south west could be demolished and replaced with a forecasted $150m coeducation campus with capacity for 2000 students following a push for families to access mixed-gender education by the state government.

The NSW Department of Education has submitted a scoping report to the Department of Planning for neighbouring Liverpool Boys and Liverpool Girls high schools to be merged into a single campus at 18 Forbes St, Liverpool.

The new plans – set to form part of a ‘Liverpool Health and Education Sub Precinct’ – would result in the demolition of the existing school buildings for a new six-storey L-shaped facility featuring general learning spaces, staff facilities and library, pending approval.

The new campus would also feature an updated school hall, gym, courtyard, three sports courts and off-site infrastructure works including a kiss and drop point and pedestrian crossings.

Planners for the development state the plans would respond to the forecasted increase of 21,072 students by 2036 in Liverpool and position the school as a “central place in the community”.

“The Liverpool High School redevelopment helps respond to this anticipated growth by delivering additional and contemporary school facilities,” planners state.

During the construction phase, an estimated 200 jobs would be generated and students are expected to attend classes inside temporary portable classrooms.

The site of the future campus contains the existing Liverpool Boys High School, Liverpool Girls High School, and the Gulyangarri Public School, which opened in January 2024.

The proposal also sought to convert the internal drop off and pick up spaces within Gulyangarri’s driveway to preschool and primary school staff parking spaces.

Gulyangarri Public School boasts 20 classrooms, four special programs rooms, four support rooms, a hall, library, covered outdoor learning area and preschool for up to 40 children.

The newly-completed facilities have four special programs rooms, a new hall, library and covered outdoor learning area.

Education Minister Prue Car said the new co-ed school is a “huge investment” that would generate new learning and career opportunities for students.

“The majority of families in this area expressed a preference for coeducation, with the increase in student population at the school to expand the range of subjects and extra-curricular activities available for students,” she said.

Liverpool MP Charishma Kaliyanda said the merger is “an essential milestone in creating a ‘cradle-to-PhD’ education precinct” in the southwest city’s centre.

“Liverpool’s population surge has caused us to assess the suitability of our existing local schools,” she said.

“This redevelopment is about creating state-of-the-art secondary schooling for our modern city.”
