House Rules contestant Troy has hit celebrity status since the show started.
The Aussie battler from Heckenberg said he’s spotted by people wherever he goes after appearing on House Rules. Even at his home he gets knocks at the door from people wanting to say hello.
“Everybody is driving past. I had somebody knock at the door the other day and say ‘I know this is going to sound stupid but can you come out and say hello to my wife in the car’.”
He said he’s been one of the show’s biggest fans over the years and couldn’t resist applying this year.
“I don’t know why but I said from the very start we would get on. I just had a feeling,” the 46-year-old said.
This week the Heckenberg couple’s 1960 weatherboard home was revealed and Troy didn’t hold back telling the other teams what he thought of their work.
The plan was to transform his bachelor pad into a family home so Bec, 39, and her two children can join him.
The oven and cooktop didn’t work and the toilet didn’t flush.
“I wasn’t really surprised the girls were being difficult because that’s them. They’re not just difficult on the show, they’re difficult off the show.
“There were some things we absolutely loved in the house and a couple of little things we didn’t like.”
Troy screwed his nose up at the ensuite, saying the black on black on black approach narrowed the 1.9m space.
“I didn’t like the loungeroom. Our departing words to the other teams was we spent a lot of time in the lounge room and want a big spacious room with plenty of seating,” he said.
“We ended up with a small lounge room with no seating ... I’m not too happy about that.”
And the yellow colour of the roof which contrasted with the open plan kitchen and dining upset him as well as the judges on the show.
“Nobody paints colour on a roof ... they had professional painters — why in the hell the painters didn’t give them advice not to do it I don’t know.
“You can’t tell them girls anything. It stuck out like dog’s nuts.”
Troy said the mental commitment of the show was the hardest. There were days they were working up to 22 hours particularly on paint night.
Now their time on House Rules has finished, they tune in each week.
“We don’t miss an episode,” he said.
