Work on the much-anticipated Heathcote Rd upgrade will be brought forward, Holsworthy state Liberal MP Melanie Gibbons said.
Earlier this month, Ms Gibbons and NSW Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister Melinda Pavey announced a $173 million funding package for the upgrade over four years.
It will include the duplication of Heathcote Rd between Infantry Pde in Hammondville and The Avenue in Voyager Point.
Part of the funding will also be directed towards widening of the Woronora River Bridge.
Budget papers show $11.6 million was allocated in 2018-19 for planning of the upgrades, but Ms Gibbons confirmed the project would start earlier than anticipated.
“Unfortunately this was not reflected in the budget timeline — but the funding allocation is there in the budget papers for it to go ahead earlier than originally thought,” she said.
“We are looking to complete the detailed design and go to tender this year and then we will start works in the new year.”
The project’s accelerated timeline will also mean traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of The Avenue and Heathcote Rd earlier too. Labor candidate for Holsworthy Charishma Kaliyanda said the party would announce its commitments later this year and the Heathcote Rd upgrade was a priority.
