A man has yelled at a police prosecutor in court after he was refused bail over a terrifying nine-hour siege in Sydney’s southwest.

David Tran, 37, appeared at Liverpool Local Court via AVL on Tuesday following the intense siege at Canley Heights overnight on Sunday.

Police rushed to the Torrents St home shortly before 10pm Sunday following reports of a domestic-related incident.

Once they arrived police spoke to Mr Tran before attempting to Taser him, police allege.

Police allege Mr Tran ran towards the back of the garage before attempting to shoot at them.

Three people were home at the time but were unharmed, police say.

Specialist police including negotiators and the Tactical Operations Unit were called in to resolve the incident.

Mr Tran allegedly left the garage without incident about 6.30am on Monday and was arrested.

He was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with five offences on Monday night, including: shoot at with intent to murder, discharge firearm with intent to resist arrest, possess unauthorised prohibited firearm, possess unauthorised firearm, posses ammunition without holding a licence, permit or authority.

In court on Tuesday, Mr Tran was represented by a representative of Legal Aid who applied for bail on his behalf.

The court heard Mr Tran suffers from schizophrenia and further mental health issues as a result, including depression and anxiety.

A police prosecutor opposed bail, saying if convicted Mr Tran could face up to 25 years in prison.

When he heard the maximum sentence, Mr Tran yelled at the court “25 years… go f**k yourself.”

Magistrate Melissa Humphries asked for the 37-year-old to be muted and said the charges he faced were “very serious”.

“There is a strong prosecution case and these are serious charges,” Magistrate Humphries told the court.

“Cause has not been shown and the application is refused.”

Mr Tran will return to court on June 28.
