Amazon Australia has opened a new fulfilment centre the size of six football fields at Moorebank.
The 43,000sq m facility, located beside the M5 motorway, is the company’s second fulfilment centre in Australia and builds on the capabilities of its first at Dandenong South, Victoria.
Amazon’s director of operations Robert Bruce said the facility catered for growing customer demand.
“This is an exciting milestone for Amazon in Australia. The Sydney facility in Moorebank will help Amazon ensure that customers enjoy fast and reliable delivery across more areas of the country,” Mr Bruce said.
The centre aims to provide faster shipping to more customers and is expected to create new jobs for the local economy, although Amazon declined to specify how many.
It would also not be drawn on the value of the facility.
This latest investment in the southwest will enable thousands of small- and medium-sized businesses that use Fulfilment by Amazon to access customers more easily.
The service allows third-party sellers to store their products at one of Amazon’s two fulfilment centres, where they are picked, packed and shipped.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller welcomed the new facility.
“We have seen such a positive response from our local community since Amazon announced it was coming,” Cr Waller said.
“We look forward to having good jobs for people close to where they live and working with Amazon as a partner in the local community. We expect the Sydney fulfilment centre will become a key logistics hub thanks to its strategic position in southwest Sydney.”
