BIG business is making the move to southwest Sydney, with Amazon the latest company to announce it will set up shop in the region.
The global online retailer will open a new distribution warehouse, known as a fulfilment centre, at the Goodman Centenary Distribution Centre in Moorebank to meet growing customer demand in Australia.
The 43,000 sqm facility is expected to create hundreds of jobs in the region and is almost double the size of Amazon’s fulfilment centre in Victoria which opened in December.
“This is a massive vote of confidence for Sydney’s south west and it is clear that many businesses are starting to become interested in setting up shop there,” western Sydney director of the Sydney Business Chamber David Borger said.
“Businesses who sell their products on Amazon will have greater and easier access to customers around Australia, which is good news for the economy.”
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said small businesses would be able to take advantage of Amazon’s distribution network to send their products.
“This boost for Moorebank is proof the NSW Government’s record investment in road and transport infrastructure is attracting major business investment and generating thousands of new jobs.”
Amazon Australia operations director Robert Bruce said he looked forward to working with the Liverpool community.
“This new facility builds on the capabilities of our first centre in Dandenong South, allowing us to continue to fulfil our commitment to fast and reliable deliveries for Australian customers.
“This investment will benefit both customers and the local economy by generating new jobs and providing small and medium sized Australian businesses who sell on amazon.com.au and use our Fulfilment by Amazon program, with an opportunity to more easily access millions of customers across the country.”
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said Liverpool was becoming a magnet for global logistics firms; Toll Group opened its $160 million retail and e-commerce fulfilment centre earlier this year and DB Schenker opened its $50 million facility late last year.
“In the last 18 months we’ve seen transport and logistics take off in Liverpool,” Mayor Waller said.
“During that time, we’ve had six major transport and logistics companies open their doors in Liverpool, with three more under development.

“That’s $560 million worth of development from this sector in just a year-and-a-half. Another $40 million worth is under assessment with our planners,” she said.
Operations are expected to begin in the second half of 2018.
Amazon launched in Australia late last year.
The company employs 1200 people in Australia and will begin recruiting immediately for roles including operations, support and technical specialists.
