‘I forgive you’: Bishop Emmanuel gives first mass after stabbing attack

A teenage boy who allegedly wanted to carry out an attack on “these kufr” and said he also wanted to “attack Jews here” will have to wait to learn whether he will be released back into the community on bail.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be identified, is also accused of claiming he was “mates” with the alleged terrorist who stabbed Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel at Wakeley and police found two handrawn ISIS flags in his bedroom.

The court heard it even saw the boy’s mother confiscate his phone after the church attack, with the prosecutor arguing “despite the best efforts” of his parents, nothing seemed to change his behaviour and he displayed “inappropriate thinking”.

The boy was one of six minors arrested in sweeping raids last Wednesday with his high-profile lawyer Ahmed Dib saying he was the youngest as the 15-year-old appeared via video link at Parramatta Children’s Court on Wednesday

The young boy has been charged with conspiring to engage in any act in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act. No pleas have been entered.

Commonwealth prosecutor Rebekah Rodger detailed the “extremely dense” alleged facts which details how he allegedly said he was “actually thinking about doing an attack”.

The court heard the young boy allegedly said “I know the bloke who’s done (the church attack) … he’s my mate”.

After Mr Dib submitted his client was a person “venting deranged thoughts” and hadn’t actually organised an attack, Ms Rodger referenced the young boy, in a separate incident on April 22, throwing a wooden plank at a person.

She explained how this evidenced how these allegations showed the young boy was also “acting rather than [just] speaking”.

Ms Rodger went on to detail further alleged comments made in a group chat titled “plans” which the boy was in.

The court heard the boy allegedly said “I really want to do an attack now too … because I have so much hatred for these kufr it’s not funny … I want to do Jihad now”.

Other alleged messages read: “I really want to target the yahood (Jewish people)” and “what about Palestine … we can attack Jews here”.

Ms Rodger said the young boy also allegedly referenced an oath of allegiance, saying “where do youse want to do the bayah”.

She said “no matter what conditions” were put in place, the young boy potentially facing “years and years and years” in jail if found guilty increased the risk to the community along with referencing a psychologist report which indicated he was “impulsive” and “makes misguided decisions”.

Ms Rodger detailed how despite the “parents taking his phone” and their “best efforts” he continued to show “inappropriate thinking”.

In reply, Mr Dib proposed “very stringent conditions” which included the boy’s parents offering up the “entirety of their families wealth” – amassing $1.5m.

“The words mean something your honour … this is a young person who if one can use the word ‘venting’ … very wrong, very unethical … deranged [comments],” he said.

Mr Dib argued there was no evidence of planning from his client, and it was only feelings of wanting to do it.

He rejected the boy was actually “mates” with the alleged church attacker, saying there was no evidence to prove this.

He told the court the prosecution wanted to “paint this picture” this boy was a “young disturbed … behaviour issues monster”.

Decision on whether the boy would be granted bail, which also includes the possibility of ankle monitoring, will be handed down on Thursday morning.
