Jaylan Doolan accused of stealing Hyundai SUV, assaulting woman with samurai sword in Orange

A man wielding a samurai sword allegedly caused a woman to fall from a moving car while stealing the vehicle in the state’s Central West.

NSW Police revealed on Thursday that officers had been called to Currong Crescent, Orange, about 7am on Monday following reports of a motor vehicle theft.

Police claim Jaylan Doolan, 21, was driving a Hyundai SUV when he allegedly tried to remove its owner – a 37-year-old woman – from the passenger seat with a samurai sword.

“During the incident, police were told he allegedly assaulted the woman with the sword before driving off causing the woman to fall from the moving car,” police said in a statement.

“The woman was not treated for any injuries.”

A short time later, police located the allegedly stolen vehicle abandoned on Lawson Crescent, Orange.

The car was seized for forensic examination and police launched an investigation.

The probe led police to a home on Algona Crescent, Orange, where they arrested Doolan about 7.10pm on New Year’s Eve.

He was taken to Orange Police Station, where he was charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon, aggravated assault with intent to take or drive motor vehicle while armed with a weapon, and being an unaccompanied learner driver.

Doolan was remanded in custody when he faced Parramatta Bail Court on Wednesday.

He is set to remain behind bars until his next appearance, at Orange Local Court, on January 9.
