Woolworths, Ashfield: Supermarket giant starts construction on $25 million new store

The supermarket giant has started work on its new inner west location, promising to uplift the shopping experience for locals with new features and design.

Woolworths pledges to remove plastic bags from stores

Ashfield residents and the wider inner west community will be even more spoiled for choice come mid-2023 with the opening of a new, state-of-the-art Woolies.

Construction commenced recently on Woolworths’ new 4000-square-metres Ashfield location, with the upcoming supermarket expected to be complete in mid-2023.

The store – located on 202 Parramatta Rd, nestled between Ashfield and Haberfield – has been in the works for a while and soon will become a reality for the supermarket giant and local community.

“Woolworths is excited to be commencing early works on a new $25 million neighbourhood shopping centre for the inner west community,” Regional Development Manager Nathan Dundovic said.

“We thank the local community for their patience as we’ve worked with the Inner West Council and authorities on building a state of the art centre on the fringe of the city.

“Working with our build partner, we will seek to minimise impacts during the construction phase which is expected to be completed in mid 2023.”

Mr Dundovic said the company would engage the community on the final look and feel of the store as the process continued.

Woolworths has an existing store in the community, located within Ashfield Mall.

However, the new store will mark a number of firsts for the area.

Unique direct-to-boot facilities will be an addition to the site, as well as a BWS, a cafe kiosk, and approximately 160 car spaces.

Sustainability is also being taken into account, with the new supermarket classified as a 4-Star Green Star development, rated by the Green Building Council of Australia, with sustainability features set to include 700 solar panels on the roof. These will have the capacity to generate 420 megawatt hours of electricity a year and will offset 25 per cent of the supermarket power consumption.

Other sustainability initiatives include the provision of EV chargers in the carpark.

Previously, the Inner West Courier reported that a second Woolworths store in Ashfield would mean better prices at supermarkets across the area for shoppers, but a slight dip in sales for competitors. ALDI and Coles both have stores within the mall, and IGA has a shop in the area.
