IWD MORNING TEA: PATRICIA GARCIA

Human rights advocate Patricia Garcia, who is the keynote speaker at Strathfield Council’s International Women’s Day (IWD) morning tea on Friday, spent more than 20 years in war zones providing assistance to refugee women. Garcia has called the deserts of countries such as Afghanistan home, working with refugees on a mass scale in Sudan, Rwanda and Croatia, helping to clean up the devastation left behind by genocide and war. In 2007 in Afghanistan one of her colleagues, a German engineer, was murdered on the same stretch of road Garcia had travelled every day for two years, when his vehicle was ambushed. This IWD event will be in support of UN Women Australia, an organisation that promotes women’s empowerment and gender equality. Council is encouraging attendees to make a donation to UN Women Australia. March 6, Strathfield Town Hall. Free, tickets strathfieldevents.nsw.gov.au

WOMEN DISTILLERS SHINE

You’ve heard of breaking the glass ceiling but in craft brewing these are just some of the females breaking the barrel. Free The Neipa, a limited edition IWD IPA that will be released on Friday, is part of the Young Henrys Brewer’s B-Side Series. Free The Neipa, created by the women of Young Henrys, is a hazy, complex and fun brew infused with the citrusy essence of bergamot, a key player in Earl Grey tea. While Bloodwood Newtown’s IWD event, Nip of Courage, on Sunday celebrates leading women of the emerging Australian craft distilling industry. Meet some female pioneers helping to shape the Australian Craft Distilling industry. You will receive a cocktail on arrival and then you will enjoy an ‘Australian Spirits Flight’ during lunch. Bloodwood’s Claire Van Vuuren will create a menu that is bold, packed with flavour and inspired by the spirits that we will be tasting on the day. Tickets ($95) includes food, cocktail on arrival, spirits flight, wine, beer.
