WestConnex release video animations of M4 tunnels

Animations of Sydney’s new $3.8 billion freeway tunnels have been released so motorists can study up on how not to miss their turn when the roads open in coming weeks. SEE THE VIDEO.

Drivers nervous about missing their exit in the $3.8 billion M4 tunnels have been given a chance to test out the track before they open in the coming weeks.

WestConnex has produced a series of animated videos simulating a car driving in the twin tunnels from Homebush to Haberfield, instructing drivers how to navigate the underground freeway.

The videos follow the tunnels from the viewpoint of a driver travelling on routes including east from the M4 to Wattle St, Haberfield, westbound from Wattle St and from the Concord interchange to Parramatta Rd, Ashfield.

The software recreates all 35 different trips drivers will be able to take going each way on the road.

New M4 project director Terry Chapman said the 5.5km, three-lane tunnels would be a “game changer” for Sydney motorists.

They will have an 80km/h speed limit and bypass 22 sets of traffic lights, he said.

“With the tunnels nearing completion, new animations have been developed to promote awareness and replicate the exact tunnel fit-out and experience motorists can expect when using the New M4 Tunnels, which will be the first road tunnels to open in Sydney since 2007,” he said.

The tunnels begin at Homebush and will emerge east of Bland St on Parramatta Rd, Ashfield and on Wattle Street, Haberfield, connecting to City West Link.

Westbound drivers will be able to enter the motorway at Wattle St and Parramatta Rd.

There will also be connections at Concord Rd, Concord — known as the Concord Interchange.

It is predicted motorists travelling on the new M4 will save up to 30 minutes on a trip from Parramatta to the CBD by 2021.

An opening date for the tunnels is still yet to be set, despite Mr Chapman saying the project was in the final stages of commissioning works and systems testing.

The freeway will be tolled, with cars to pay $4.27 between Homebush and Haberfield and $3.12 between Concord and Haberfield.

Those travelling from the widened M4 between Parramatta and Haberfield will pay a maximum of $7.89 one way.
