HIGH-FLYING Marrickville theatre designer Julie Lynch usually designs costumes for Opera Australia or companies such as the Bell Shakespeare Company.
But for the past few weeks she’s been working with local youngsters in a new project creating unusual paper costumes the students will wear in a special commemorative Anzac centenary march.
Primary school students from Marrickville, Petersham, Stanmore and St Peters are attending weekend workshops with the renowned costume designer at the Marrickville Town Hall.
Ms Lynch, a guest lecturer in design at NIDA and the University of Technology, has turned to basic art materials such as paper mache, corrugated cardboard, paint, staples, masking tape and plenty of glue for the unique outfits.

The designs are a combination of mascots – Australian animals such as kangaroos, koalas and kookaburras – and wartime characters.
“The students are adoring it – that makes it so worthwhile,” Ms Lynch said.
“It’s a fun project and very inspiring.”
Imaginations have run wild at the workshops, with students mixing and matching cultural references with historic uniforms to create the striking costumes.
Marrickville Council is organising the march, which will include live horses and camels, as well many other local community groups.
The Marrickville Remembers Commemorative March will run from 10am along Marrickville Road on Sunday, April 19.
