The Inner West council’s $57 million GreenWay program, scheduled for completion by 2024, has picked up a national landscape architecture award.

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture granted the corridor through Leichhardt, Petersham, Lewisham, Dulwich Hill and Hurlstone Park an accolade for excellence in urban design.

The project covers Inner West council and City of Canterbury Bankstown council.

The AILA named the regeneration of three hectares of non-accessible open space into public parkland as a winning design point.

Inner West mayor Darcy Byrne said: “The design threads together a delightful sequence of spaces that include recreational parkland, ecological restoration areas and cultural precincts.”

“It will provide pedestrian and cycle connections to adjacent communities and existing parks.”

“It is such a beautiful asset for the community and will give pleasure and fantastic recreational opportunities for many generations to come,” Cr Byrne said.

Lead consultants, McGregor Coxall landscape architects, applied for the award.

The plan, conceived over two decades ago, links Cooks River and Iron Cove via an “environmental … travel corridor”.

The Inner West Courier previously reported that the project, due for completion in 2021, was held up by “bureaucratic delays”.

Following the Inner West Light Rail route and Hawthorne Canal, the 5.8km GreenWay is set to feature bike paths, foreshore walks, cultural and historical sites, cafes, parks, playgrounds and sporting facilities.
