Ten Tenor’s Love Is in The Air tour inspired by wedding bells

Ten Tenor’s Love Is in The Air world tour, that launches this month with an 18-concert Australian leg, was inspired by a real-love story.

Ten Tenors

Ten is the magic number for the Ten Tenor’s Jared Newall.

Speaking in Sydney ahead of the launch of the Ten Tenor’s Love Is in the Air world tour, Newall said the Australian music ensemble, that has performed to more than 90 million people worldwide since forming in 1995, was a unique combination of classical and contemporary music featuring 10-part harmonies.

“As one of 10, people could think you would get lost in the mix but actually what it does is highlight how unique each person is,” he said.

”We all get solos and styles of music that suit our voice and we get to create a sound that is unique.

“I think we get to create a sound that is more than the sum of its parts.”

Newall, 35, got his big break while performing in a Melbourne musical in 2011.

Former Ten Tenor Josh Piterman, who has gone on to amass a big musical theatre portfolio that includes West Side Story, Cats and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, was in the crowd and asked him to audition for the group.

“Josh Piterman got me the audition,” Newall said.

“I was in the group within three days and I was on tour with them within a month. It was a whirlwind and I’ve been touring with the Ten Tenors ever since, so eight years now.”

The current line-up, that includes Newall, Cameron Barclay, Keane Fletcher, Michael Edwards, Daniel Belle, James Watkinson, Nathan Lay, Boyd Owen, JD Smith and Paul Gelsumini, is ready to start the 18-concert Australian leg of their world tour celebrating love.

It was Gelsumini’s wedding in February that was the start of the Love Is in the Air tour as well as the current album that includes a track-list of love and break-up songs with two guest female vocalists - Australia’s Naomi Price and Storm Large, from the USA, who featured on the CBS reality TV show Rock Star: Supernova.

“We were singing at Paul Gelsumini’s wedding,” Newall said.

“From there came the seed of an idea that we wanted to do an entire album of these songs.

And that is what we have done, that is what Love is in the Air is.”

On the Love is in the Air album, Newall said it was about love; love between people, love of music and of sharing time with one another.

“We are so excited because it is a new show and we are taking it on the road for the first time in Australia, in our home country to a home crowd,” he said.

“We have a brand new album that is topping the charts at the moment with all this music, we will be signing CDs at shows and meeting our fans. It is the start of what is going to be a really exciting world tour.”

And best of all Australia gets to see it first.
