Teenage boy, 17, arrested after alleged serious assault on elderly man at Ashfield polling booth

An elderly man is in hospital and a teenager in police custody following an alleged assault at a polling booth in Sydney’s inner west.

A teenager is in custody, and an elderly man is in hospital, following an alleged “serious assault” outside a polling booth in Sydney’s inner west.

Emergency services responded to reports of an assault outside an Ashfield polling booth on Liverpool Rd about 1pm on Wednesday.

Paramedics treated the man, who is believed to be in his 80s, at the scene before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious condition.

Police arrested a 17-year-old-boy at the location and took him to Burwood Police Station, where he is assisting with inquiries.

A crime scene has been established at the scene which specialist police will examine.

As investigations continue, police are urging anyone with information about the alleged assault, or who was in the area at the time with any available mobile phone/dashcam footage to come forward.
