Sydney wild weather: Cooks River flood warnings could create another wet, wild night for inner west residents

The Sydney storm is not over yet for residents of the inner west, as another abnormally high tide tonight could cause the Cooks River to flood again.

The inner west was inundated when the Cooks River flooded on Sunday – and it could all happen again tonight when the tide comes in.

Inner west residents should steel themselves for another potentially wet and wild evening as a high tide rolls into the Cooks River tonight.

The Cooks River at Tempe Bridge peaked at 1.4m around 9pm last night, causing minor flooding – and residents can expect more of the same when the tide comes in again at 9pm tonight.

The SES have predicted minor flood levels of 1.3m tonight, which could force Holbeach Ave, Bay St, Old St and Young St in Tempe to close.

Illawarra Rd, Wharf St and Riverside Cres in Marrickville and low lying areas such as parks and open spaces could also be affected by floodwaters.

The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed abnormally high tides would enhance the flood risk, primarily during three hours on either side of the high tide at 9.20pm.

The SES advised residents to prepare for evacuation by packing valuables, important documents, clothes and supplies for a 48-hour period.

They also reminded residents not to drive through floodwaters, and to have a plan in case roads are closed.

Meanwhile, residents and commuters across the inner west are dealing with the damage wrought by the east coast low on Saturday and Sunday.

The Inner West Light Rail service is only running between Lilyfield and Dulwich Hill due to storm damage to the overhead wiring.

Buses have replaced services between Lilyfield and Central, with commuters reporting major delays via Twitter.

Some Rozelle residents are also experiencing power outages as a result of the storm damage, with Ausgrid reporting power will be back on some time this afternoon.

The ferocious wind and rain tore parts of the roof off Burwood PCYC, which was recently sold.

The Leichhardt Children’s Centre is closed today due to flood damage, with the Inner West Council hoping it will reopen tomorrow.

Balmain Library also suffered minor water damage, with visitors advised to use the side doors while the power is out.

Fallen trees on the Hume Highway also contributed to a power outage on Sunday in Burwood.

However, even torrential rain could not deter inner west residents from various important tasks over the weekend as they took to the hustings and the football field.

The Wests Tigers’ reserve grade team took on the Penrith Panthers for the InTrust Super Premiership during a slippery game at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday afternoon.

They ultimately came in second best with a score of 42-24.

Former Leichhardt councillor Simon Emsley and a team of Leichhardt Labor branch members also took to the hustings to hand out leaflets for Grayndler federal Labor MP Anthony Albanese ahead of the Federal Election.
